Originally dating from the 13th century, North Shields Fish Quay was built in its current incarnation in 1870. Once the largest kipper producer in the UK, the quay fell into decline in the 1980’s due to problems with the fishing industry.

Still a working fishing port, North Shields can now boast being the premier prawn port in England. This comeback in the fortunes of the port are not restricted to fishing. North Shields has undergone a renaissance over the last decade and this is clearly visible in the improvements made in and around the fish quay. Browse the many fresh fish shops stocking everything from Lobster, Crabs and a huge selection of seafood delights.

Now the smell of garlic and the sound of music from the many bars and restaurants mingle with the noise from seagulls wheeling overhead, following the fishing boats heading to port. Historic landmarks proliferate the fish quay, including the 17th Century Clifford’s Fort dominating the head land, built as a defensive position during the Third Dutch War. Tynemouth

The historic village of Tynemouth is a short walk along the River Tyne promenade. Dominating the village are the ruins of the 7th century Priory sitting on Pen Bal Crag and the remains of the Castle.

Tynemouth can boast some world class dining, blue flag beaches and plethora of independent shops to browse. An market is held every weekend is held every weekend in the recently restored Victorian Station. All this makes Tynemouth a great place to visit for the day and all this is on the doorstep of Collingwood Gardens.

Tynemouth’s maritime history is long and varied. The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was established in 1864, the first of its kind, it’s story is told in the museum housed in historic Watch House. Locally born Lord Collingwood is recognised with the magnificent monument built to recognise his achievements. Collingwood led the fleet into battle at Trafalgar and assumed command when Lord Nelson fell.
