“I just really felt the Lord was telling me: ‘This is man you’re gonna marry,’” she said. “Stop fighting me and marry him already.”

Neely, who turned 61 last week, died Saturday morning after being pinned under a truck while working in a residential neighborhood in Happy Valley.

He was delivering bark and was unloading it when his commercial truck began to roll backward, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. He tried to jump into the truck to stop it, but the truck rolled onto its side, pinning him underneath.

He was taken to a local hospital then life-flighted to the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, where he died, VanZanten-Neely said.

“I’m still in disbelief that he’s gone,” she said in an interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive. “They let me go see his body … he just looked like he was sleeping, and I just wanted to wake him up.”

Neely’s first wife died in 2017, leaving behind him and his grown son, Joseph Neely. Originally from California, the family lived in Sheridan for years before he moved to Oregon City.

He was a lifelong truck driver, his wife said. The two had just driven up to Seattle for his birthday to buy a truck he “wanted so badly” — a 2006 Toyota Tundra. When Joseph was younger, he would take him on his truck deliveries, hitting up the mills and delivering hauls.

“He loved being on the road; he loved seeing things and going places,” Joseph said. He runs a cleaning business with his wife in Sheridan, encouraged by his father to become self-employed.

Neely and VanZanten-Neely, a health insurance broker, first met at the Life Christian Center church in Milwaukie about three years ago, the same church where the two would get married.

They had a wedding party of 25 people and streamed the ceremony on Facebook Live, as pandemic-time weddings do. But it was beautiful, VanZanten-Neely said.

She said the two never had a single argument about anything during the short time they were together. They preferred to enjoy each other’s company going crabbing on the coast, catching enough crabs last year to feast on for Thanksgiving dinner. For Christmas, the two gave each other fishing poles — to catch bigger crabs. They were planning to go back this year.

“We had both been so lonely for so long,” she said.

Neely moved in with VanZanten-Neely after they got married to a small house in Oregon City they shared with a cat, Kiki, and a beagle chihuahua mix they adopted together, Raffy. It was a quiet neighborhood, but Neely “didn’t know the meaning of the word stranger,” VanZanten-Neely said.

He was always off helping their neighbors. “‘I’ll be right back!’” VanZanten-Neely recalled him saying, right before he left to go help with a neighbor’s broken patio steps or other home repair.

Every morning, Neely gave her a kiss before he left for work at 6 a.m. She sometimes would be awake, but the morning he died, she was still asleep. She doesn’t remember him leaving.

The two exchanged “I love you” every day to let the other know they were thinking of them at work. But that Saturday morning, she got a phone call from his work dispatcher instead.

“I know he’s in a better place now because he’s with our Lord,” she said. “And I will see him again some day. I’ve enjoyed every second of being married to him.”

Friends of the family have organized a GoFundMe to raise money for funeral costs and medical expenses.
